orthodontic advices

(Retainer):

orthodontic

Brackets:

Lingual:

Why Tonsils cause Bad Breath

Tonsils and bad breath are connected in such a way that the tonsils have certain kinds of substances and bacteria that may cause halitosis or bad breath for a person. This is because of the location of the tonsil at the back of the oral cavity. In order for us to fully understand the connection between consoles and bad breath, let us first define the exact location of the tonsil and its many parts.

Parts of the Tonsil

There are four major parts of the tonsil as follows.

1-Nasopharynx- this refers to the area of the upper mouth at the very back of the throat.

2-Pharyngeal Tonsil-or adenoids are located behind the nasal cavity at the upper throat.

3-Palatine Tonsils-is the one located at the very back of the mouth and is visible when the mouth is opened.

4-Lingual Tonsil-the part that is located at the base of the tongue.

Halitosis is primarily caused by the accumulation of bacteria in your mouth. Those bacteria combined with the food particles that are left inside your mouth will definitely cause bad breath if you do not seem it very often.

Why Tonsils cause Bad Breath

In connection with the tonsil, these parts of the tonsil have cells that cause it to their main physical attributes. As we all know, cells reproduced and multiply. When they reproduce, they tend to leave off some of the “dead” cells onto the surface of the tonsils thus causing balls of bacteria to accumulate from behind the tongue.

If this happens, these dead cells will therefore emit a foul smelling odor that will be offensive to those who are exposed to them. This condition is therefore aggravated by the remnants of food particles that you leave after eating.

Other Possible Causes of Bad Breath In Connection With Tonsils

A throat infection can also cause bad breath. This is because of the bacteria that the infection will definitely produce. If this bacteria mixes with saliva and the food particles that you eat every day, you will surely experience having foul smelling breath.

Aside from this, any kind of throat or tonsil infection can also affect the odor of a person’s breath. The question still remains, how do we deal with bad breath cause by the throat infection or tonsils?

Bad Breath Cures

1-If you happen to have bad breath because of a throat or tonsil infection, it is best to have a visit to the doctor in order for him to give you the prescription that you may need to cure your infection. The basic principle of the whole thing is to cure what is wrong with your throat. If you are able to do this, the bad breath will slowly fade away.

2-Aside from this, regular brushing of your teeth as well as scrubbing your tongue will help decrease the bacteria that cause bad breath for your mouth. You should also check for tooth decay and plaque so that bacteria will not accumulate inside your mouth.

Tonsils and bad breath can be cured if you just become very observant and learn more about your body.

Permanent Teeth Erupting Behind the Primary Teeth

Sometimes the permanent teeth erupt behind the primary teeth in children, before they are lost. Many parents become concerned if they see the permanent teeth coming behind the primary teeth in their child's mouth. With this child develops double rows of teeth. This condition is sometimes referred to as “Shark teeth”. The name comes from the fact that sharks also have a double row of teeth.

It is a common condition and occurs in about 10 percent of all children. These are most commonly seen in the lower incisors region, but they can also occur at the upper incisors or primary molars region.

It can occur at any time, but are most common during two periods in a child's development. The first time is around age of 6 yrs, when the lower incisors erupt. The second is around age of 10 to11 yrs, when the upper premolars erupt.

Permanent Teeth Erupting Behind the Primary Teeth

Causes of Shark Tooth

During the normal development, the permanent tooth slowly resorbs the primary tooth root when it erupts under it. When the root is almost completely lost, the primary tooth loses its attachment and falls out of the tooth socket. The permanent tooth then moves and erupts into the empty space.

Normally the permanent teeth develop lingual to the primary teeth, so any kind of deviation of permanent tooth from normal position can lead to retained primary tooth. Another condition causing retention of primary teeth is crowding of the dentition. The new tooth then erupts behind the primary tooth by taking the path of least resistance. This ultimately ends up with two rows of teething in child’s mouth.

Causes of Shark Tooth

Treatment of shark Teeth

If you find that both permanent and temporary teeth are there in your child’s mouth for more than three weeks then it is advised to take him/her to pedodontist. It is important to monitor permanenttooth eruption. No two teeth should occupy the same space at the same time period. The dentist will evaluate the condition and decide according to the situation.

Extraction of milk teeth required

Though it is not an emergency situation, but it should be treated. If the retained primary teeth are not removed, it may lead to the development of various malocclusions such as crowding, narrow dental arch, cross bite in the resulting permanent dentition.

If the primary tooth is getting mobile and the permanent tooth continues to erupt, the primary tooth will fall out and the situation corrects itself.

Causes of Shark Tooth

Once the permanent tooth erupts completely behind the primary tooth, there is nothing to push or resorb the root. This allows the primary tooth to stay in place. A dentist will usually extract the primary tooth and create space for the permanent tooth to erupt.

In most of the cases, the permanent tooth will come into position in a few weeks or months time. The normal tongue movements will push the malaligned permanent teeth into line.

In some cases still there is not enough space for the permanent tooth to move into the position even after the primary tooth is removed. In these cases, proximal slicing or disking of adjacent teeth may be performed. However, orthodontic treatment may be required in some severe cases.

Reasons and Treatment of Pain on Biting or Chewing

Pain on biting or chewing can actually be extremely difficult to cope up with as these two are activities carried out daily and are extremely important for the well-being of a person. There are numerous reasons for the development of such a type of pain. Some kind of dental disorder or condition like decayed teeth, fractured teeth, gum disease or even tooth roots that are devoid of gum layer can cause such a problem. The pain on biting ranges from mild to moderate. At times, it might also become severe depending on the related disorder. The aggravating and relieving factors for pain on chewing vary in every separate case. Thorough oro-dental examination is important supported by a detailed case history and other diagnostic aids like X-rays. There are certain systemic diseases that are associated or act as a causative factor for pain on chewing or biting. They are mainly cardiac problems like angina or myocardial infarction, ENT (ear nose throat) infections or infection of sinuses and TMJ related disorders.

Pain on Biting or Chewing

Causes and Treatment Options for Pain on Chewing

The general causes of pain from chewing or biting are mentioned below with the treatment options that are used to manage such cases:

Dental Decay

One of the most common causes of toothache while biting or chewing is dental decay or dental caries. Dental caries is an infectious microbiologic disease that causes the demineralisation of the inorganic part and then the disintegration of the organic part of the tooth structure. Dental caries can be at various levels. It starts from as small as a minor discoloration and can proceed to severe conditions like non-vitality of the tooth. The decay causes the breakdown of tooth structure resulting in the formation of cavities. Cavities can involve only enamel, enamel and dentin or even reach dental pulp (innermost layer of tooth which is richly supplied with blood and nerve fibres). Dental decay extending to the pulp cause extreme pain while chewing or biting as the chewing forces are directed on to the nerve fibres situated in the dental pulp. If the layer of insulation (dentin) is moderately thick in the cavity formed, the pain on chewing is less. If the dentin layer is very thin or is absent, there is excruciating pain when anything pokes the dental pulp within the cavity.

Pain on Biting or Chewing

Treatment options for Tooth Decay

The treatment option recommended for this type of problem is the restoration of the tooth after the removal of the decayed layers of tooth. There are various types of restorative materials available like tooth coloured and non-tooth coloured. If the cavity extends beyond the level of dentin i.e. into the pulp, then root canal treatment is the ideal treatment option.

Gum Disease

Inflammation of the gums or loss of attachment from tooth root can be a contributing factor for pain on biting and chewing. Gingival inflammation can occur as a result of poor oral hygiene. When the food debris is not removed properly during brushing or rinsing of mouth, it accumulates in the area between the teeth and gums. This irritates the soft gums, in turn, and they respond by undergoing the process of inflammation. The swollen gums become extremely sensitive and bleed easily during activities like brushing. If the oral care is neglected the gum inflammation moves on to the next level- loss of attachment. Once the gums get detached from the tooth surface, there is a chance for the formation of periodontal pocket. Pockets worsen the condition because they become the area for collection of debris that cannot be eliminated easily. Exposed root surfaces causes pain while chewing. The gingival inflammation can have other causes like hereditary periodontal disease, habits like smoking and lifestyle diseases like diabetes.

Pain on Biting or Chewing

Treatment Options for Gum Disease

The treatment of gum problems is based on the measures like oral prophylaxis to eliminate plaque and calculus (hard deposits). In progressive conditions, curettage and root planning are suggested to ensure for detailed cleaning.

Hypersensitivity

As age progresses, the dentin layer wears off. This is called attrition of teeth. Tooth gets worn down due to abrasion (physical wear) or erosion (chemical wear). Due to physical trauma like hard tooth-brushing, there is loss of gum tissue in that area which leads to exposed tooth root surfaces. In both the above mentioned cases, the patient experiences pain while biting or chewing. Hypersensitivity can be felt as a short, sharp, pain like sensation that lasts for few seconds while consuming items that are either hot or cold.

Pain on Biting or Chewing

Treatment Option for Hypersensitivity

This condition is generally treated by the application of topical fluoride gels and sensitivity toothpastes. If the condition is severe and pain is unbearable, root canal treatment is opted.

Cracked Tooth Syndrome

This factor can also contribute to the pain while biting or chewing. The tooth is generally healthy without any trace of dental decay or gingival disease. The tooth gets fractured due to excessive biting forces that are usually generated while biting hard objects. The detection part is difficult because the external features like dental decay are not present. A light is used to detect the fracture line. Through that crack the dental pulp gets exposed leading to toothache while chewing.

Pain on Biting or Chewing

Treatment Options for Cracked Tooth Syndrome

The treatment for this problem comprises root canal procedure and the placement of a metal ceramic crown thereafter.

Impacted Teeth

Impacted teeth can be a source of pain in some cases. Impacted teeth push the neighbouring teeth to create space for their eruption. This can generate tremendous pain in the lower jaw mainly.

Pain on Biting or Chewing

Treatment Options for Impacted Teeth

Painkillers provide some amount of symptomatic relief. The final treatment is the surgical elimination of the impacted tooth.

How Chipped tooth is fixed by Dentist

Chipped tooth means when a part of the tooth is chipped and this happens mostly with the front teeth though it can happen in the back teeth also. In case of chipped teeth the part which s chipped can be very small or it can involve the major part of the tooth. The treatment of the chipped tooth varies with the amount of tooth chipped.

Chipped

What are the Causes of chipped Tooth

When the tooth is chipped? What are the causes which causes the chipping of the teeth? The main cause is the trauma to the teeth. When something hits the face it can cause chipping of the teeth or in case of children it can be due to the outdoor sports like cycling, skating etc.. The boys are more prone to the chipping of teeth than the girls. Some times because of some habits like putting the pencils in the mouth or opening the pins from the mouth or holding the needles from the front teeth can cause the chipping of the teeth. Sometimes the teeth are chipped when they are already weakened by the decay and because of the decay the tooth becomes thin and chips.

Chipped

Fixing Chipped Teeth

Treatment of the chipped teeth varies according to the amount of the tooth chipped. If the chipped part is very small then sometimes just by rounding of the edges takes care of it. There is no need to build the chipped tooth structure. But if it is big and cannot be just rounded off then the part of the tooth which is chipped is built with the composite. If the chipped part is with the patient then that part can be reattached using the composite. It gives very good shade matching as the original tooth structure is being attached and the results are very esthetic. If the dentine is involved when the tooth is chipped and the patient feels hot and cold sensation the treatment plan changes. In such cases the tooth is built with the composite or the veneers can be planned. But if the chipped part of the tooth is very near to the pulp and dentist feels that it can expose the pulp then the root canal treatment is done.

Chipped

After doing the root canal treatment one can either opt for porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns. In some cases the tooth is so much chipped that the crown part is almost gone. It is not possible to go for the porcelain crowns as the support is very less. In such cases post and core is planned. After putting the post and core the dentist gives the porcelain crown. For front teeth even in porcelain crown there is option of full ceramic crown or the porcelain fused to metal crown. In full ceramic crown though they are expensive but they are very esthetic as they are able to reproduce the exact translucency like the natural teeth but in case of fused to metal crowns as there is metal inside the translucency part is lacking and sometimes it gives artificial looks. Again the decision depends upon which tooth is affected and which type of crown the patient can afford.

How to Prevent Chipped Tooth

It is said that prevention is better than cure, so it is better to prevent having chipped tooth than to have it and then go for treatment afterwards. There are various ways to prevent chipped tooth.

1-Wearing Mouth guard – Whenever playing some outdoor sports in which chances of trauma or hit are there, the mouth guard will prevent the front teeth and hence it’s chipping.

2-Maintaining good oral hygiene – Maintain very good oral hygiene by doing proper flossing and brushing. Go for regular dental checkups after six months. Maintaining good oral hygiene will prevent the dental decay and this will prevent the chipping of teeth because of dental decay.

3-Foods – Try not to eat very hard and sticky food. Do not put pencils and pens in mouth. Also do not try to open things from the front teeth.

If you have a chipped tooth then it is always better to visit your dentist ASAP and get the treatment done as delay in treatment can complicate the treatment plan.
